I love a ghost! 👻 Who knew? OK, pretty much everyone. . But LOOK at one of the gifts @themachmonkey got me yesterday. It is a ghost from the @yorkghostmerchants, an independent company in York that sells THE most desirable handmade ghosts. . Mine is the Rose Pompadour, named after Madame de Pompadour, one of Louis XV mistresses, who loved pink clothes. Everyone is unique, and they are made in v small batches. . The quality of my ghost is incredible, she is smooth and beautiful and has a tiny maker’s mark, and look at the box she came in! It is designed to look like the shop on The Shambles where the ghosts are made and sold. I can’t wait to go back to York - it’s been a few years - and see the shop for myself. . She is going to sit on my desk and help me with my edits. In this photo I have posed her against some, but not all, of my favourite ghostly reads. 📖👻 . What do you think? Isn’t she beautiful? ♥️

Today I am celebrating my 38th birthday and wondering how on Earth that happened. (Instagram insists on changing Earth 🌎 to a capital letter, and I can’t be bothered to have a fight with it). . I’ve had some brill gifts and cards and messages - including this beautiful mug from @cornishware - and a GHOST 👻 from @yorkghostmerchants which is super cool and beautiful and sitting on my desk. . I’ve just had my edit notes back for my 6th full length novel - I’m going to start working on the edits tomorrow - and even though most of the time I feel like I’m about 14, am obsessed with plastic Funko models (toys) - a new one arriving today to add to my already ridiculous collection - and am having chicken Kiev for my b’day dinner, I don’t think I have totally wasted my life so far. 🤷🏼‍♀️ . I feel pretty happy with how things are going, am very lucky to have lots of lovely people in my life, and I get to spend my days making up stories and giving characters Happy Ever Afters, which seems pretty amazing whenever I stop to think about it. . Thank you for the lovely messages I’ve had so far! 😘📖🎉💕🌟

I finished The Memory Wood by Sam Lloyd on Saturday, and it’s still in my head. . It is so original, and has some properly brilliant characters - wait until you meet Elissa - but it is also dark and unflinching, and packs a pretty emotional punch. It explores the best and worst of humanity, and, if you’re anything like me, will make you cry. . Happy nearly birthday to me! 📖 . We’re in London staying with my folks this weekend, and I have had some of my birthday presents early! Along with the loveliest, softest woolly hat (see my stories) I’ve had some other epic gifts. . Ghostlands sounds both beautiful and spooky and is just my kind of read, 👻 and you can’t go wrong with the wonderful Georgette Heyer. ♥️ . I’ve also been given this bullet journal, made by @compoco_, which has iridescent foil edges and the most delicious, tactile cover. . Lovely lovely things for reading and writing in. 💕 Also, I’ve spent the last few days planning out a new story idea and I honestly don’t think I could be more excited about it. 🎉🎉🎉🤗🤗🤗

I’m having a change of scene today, working in the front room instead of my writing cave. I am closer to the kettle, and I can watch people walking past outside while I plot something new. A different view or perspective is a good way of sparking new ideas. 💡 We’ve got a busy week ahead, out tonight then off to Corby then London on Thursday, getting in some early birthday celebrations with my folks before coming back to Norfolk to continue the celebrations. 🥳 So I’m trying to use these quiet days to work on a new story idea. 📖 QUESTIONS 🎈 Do you always try to extend your birthday as long as possible, even if you’re not particularly happy about getting older? 👩🏼‍💻 Do you like changing your reading or writing spot, or do you have one “go to” place? 🍝 North Norfolk people, where is a really lovely place to go for a Saturday birthday lunch, with good food and a beautiful setting? Here is my unfiltered face. Pic actually taken two weeks ago after a cold but sunny walk on Holkham Beach, where dodging the tide-out puddles and streams was impossible and my feet got wet despite sturdy boots. 👢 It was one of the best days I’ve had in a long time, and has renewed my love of all things North Norfolk. 💕 We’ve had a much lazier weekend this weekend - it has London bookends either side of it so we’ve chosen to loaf about, but it has still had loads of highlights, including: 💇🏼‍♀️ Getting my straggly hair tidied up. 🍷 Too much wine down the pub and Making Plans with @themachmonkey. 📖 Finishing Cathy Bramley’s brilliant new book A Patchwork Family. 📒 Writing in my new Clever Fox 🦊 planner. 🎞 Watching Nighthunter, Henry Cavill’s latest film. It’s dark and twisty and gripping, and he’s such a good (and beautiful) actor. 🧆 Veggie Sunday roast 🍾 Pink fizz.
